Tom Hartigan

Mechanical Engineer, Hunter Water

I’m a husband, a father to one fur baby, a lover of sports, a terrible dancer and tarred with the same geeky brush as all engineers.

I’ve been working with the Investment and Asset Planning team at Hunter Water for three years since returning from the Oil & Gas industry in Asia and have recently moved into our Drought Response team in a Team Leader role.

I completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) at the University of Newcastle while undertaking a cadetship with OneSteel & Moly Cop in the steel manufacturing industry. Throughout my career, I have been extremely fortunate to work in a variety of industries and I relish the opportunity to make connections and collaborate with others to come up with innovative solutions to new challenges. My goal is to ensure a ‘common sense is common practice’ approach is evident in everything that I do.

Over the past twelve months, I’ve been working with Hunter Water’s People and Culture team to kick start ‘Source: Young Development Network’. This group of young and young at heart aims to build strong personal networks that engage, support and challenge each other to achieve our career aspirations. Our steering committee is delivering this vision by holding Lunch & Learn sessions, Informational Toolbox meetings, Site tours of our treatment plants and Social Swill Networking events.

1. What three words best describe you?
Adaptable, personable, enthusiastic.

2. What is one thing you couldn’t live without?
I couldn’t live without my support networks; friends, peers, colleagues and family. They listen, challenge, provide feedback (sometimes far to honestly) and are a wealth of knowledge.

3. What motivates and drives you?
I am motivated to deliver the best level of service and infrastructure to the community of the Hunter region. This vision can only be delivered by understanding what the needs and expectations of the community are, particularly moving into a period of water restrictions. In an environment where change is the only constant, I am continually expanding my capabilities, seeking out innovative technologies and adaptive planning processes to deliver the right level of investment in infrastructure for our community.

4. Where would you like to be in 10 years?
Since joining Hunter Water I have been extremely privileged to work alongside the very best and brightest. In 10 years I would like to be a valued peer within a senior leadership team, within the water industry. I strongly believe in the essential services this industry provides to the community and believe I can make a real difference. It’s for this reason that I want to continue my personal and professional development in the field.

5. What advice would you give to someone five years younger than you, in any industry, to help them achieve success?
Get out of the office and talk to people at the coal face – make sure you understand the problem thoroughly before prototyping and don’t be afraid to test our your ideas to land on the right solution. Most importantly, be confident in your ability to deliver the right solution.

Think big, prototype small and scale fast.
