Director of Residential project marketing, Colliers International
Our inaugural member of the month has been selected by the HYP board and goes to Dane Crawford from Colliers International. Dane has a vast experience in residential real estate transactions across the Newcastle region having previously worked at Creer Property and McGrath Property.
How do you manage your work/life balance?
It’s a challenge. They key for me is getting up early. I am a big believer that the way you start your day is the way it unfolds. Also understanding that given my role, there will also be work to do no matter how many hours I put in. I write a daily list of tasks needing to be completed and always start with the hardest things first. Focus on your strengths and use them to your advantage. Delegate jobs that reflect your weaknesses.
Being the youngest director in Colliers International’s Newcastle team what advice would you give young professionals out there trying to climb the corporate ladder?
I would say network with people. Meet as many people as you can. Work hard, talent is not enough, you have to put in the work and eliminate laziness.
Where do you see your industry heading and how have you positioned yourself to benefit from these changes?
For me the firm that adopts the best user interaction will win. The way our customers interact is changing rapidly and they are demanding more. I am now focussing on customer engagement and customer experience management. These 2 platforms will be critical to maintain leadership in the market. We are positioning ourselves now to be the go to firm for residential project marketing.
What motivates and drives you?
Nearly every day I ask myself “what do I want to do for the rest of my life”. If ever that is different to role I am in then I will change it. Simple as that. You have to do what you love. I happen to love property. Property touches the lives of all Australians. We play a role in creating prosperity, jobs and help shape strong and lasting communities. In effect we are changing people’s lives, that’s what motivates me.
What characteristics do you think an individual needs to be successful in your profession?
In simple terms, be a value add provider. I always operate with a mindset and drive that focusses on disproportionately bringing value. Show more, do more, give more. This business is all about relationships and building trust around those relationships, and like all relationships, they require work. Never let fear of losing trump the excitement of victory, so to me success is about putting all my effort into achieving the goal at hand and for me that means making every minute count. Also, have thick skin. This business will chew you up and spit you out very quickly if you let it.
Where would you like to be in 10 years?
Right now, I see myself still with Colliers, working alongside the best Residential Project Marketing Team in the country. Colliers is a special Company that creates an environment that inspires and enables people to do life’s best work. It challenges, demands, invites and enables us to continuously be growing into the best version of ourselves.
