What is good Ergonomics?

Your spine is one of the most important parts of your body. It protects the spinal cord and allows the proper flow of information from your brain to the organs and tissues of your body. Sitting can be terribly detrimental to your spinal health, but it must be done by many people within the careers they have chosen. Therefore, here are a few tips to try to minimise the damage caused by excessive sitting;

  1. Chair – A good chair will allow you to change the vertical height of the sitting base, as well as the height of the back rest. The height should allow your feet to sit flat on the floor without the need to cross your legs or feet. Lean back into the chair and allow the low back support to push your low back forward and bring your shoulders back.
  2. Screen monitor – the screen should be directly in front of your eyes when you are sitting up straight.
  3. Keyboard/mouse/phone – all of the objects you use on a regular basis should be as close to the edge of the desk as possible. The more you have to reach forward, the more you will tend to slouch
  4. Document holder – this will help keep your eyes up and your spine straight
  5. Breaks – movement is the most important thing you can do for you body. Getting up and having a stretch every 30 minutes will make a significant difference by the end of each day.

Ongoing, recurrent, or sharp pain can often be a sign of a more serious problem. If this occurs, a spinal assessment from a qualified chiropractor is the best course of action.
