Hunter Young Professionals (HYP) is a network for a new generation.
HYP provides opportunities for young people to network in a business environment, gain new management and leadership skills, interact socially together and support the local community so that they can develop as the business leaders of tomorrow.
To develop ourselves and our community through professional learning and social networking.
We are a community of individuals who value opportunities to learn and develop ourselves as professionals. We like hanging out with other like-minded individuals who value developing their own professional brand irrespective of their industry. And we do all of this at fun events in cool venues across the Hunter.
WHAT SORTS OF EVENTS DO YOU RUN?
We run our events in various formats at a variety of times to keep everything lively! Some just for fun, like our Christmas party, trivia night and casual drinks and sometimes we get our work hats on and run professional development type events, inviting speakers to share their knowledge on a range of topics aimed at our demographic. We’ve learn’t about topics such as buying a house, making yourself indispensable at work, social media and leadership among others. Fine dining, breakfast forums, debates, drinks and canapes… if you want it; we’ll put it on!
I’VE NEVER BEEN TO A NETWORKING EVENT, WHAT ARE HYP EVENTS LIKE?
We like to create a fun, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere where people can easily meet and talk to new people. We don’t expect you to buy things, we don’t expect you to sell things. Its not a competition for handing out the most business cards! Have some fun, and just chat. The people at our events may only be starting out in their careers or they may already have a lot of experience. They can provide guidance, or share the same experiences as you.
At the end of the day, our members are the next generation of business leaders in the Hunter Region, and you’re starting relationships with people now than can provide benefits for many years to come.
I’M NERVOUS ABOUT ATTENDING MY FIRST HYP EVENT. I DON’T KNOW ANYONE WHO’S GOING…

THIS MAY SOUND GIRLY, BUT WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO HYP EVENTS?
If the event is before or after work, business casual is pretty standard. If there are any restrictions we’ll make sure its on the event invite. Oh, and for special occasions we might throw on a dress, like if it’s the Christmas party!
I KNOW YOU HOST EVENTS BUT WHAT ELSE DOES HYP DO?
We’re starting to expand our offerings to provide things like a mentoring program and opportunities to participate in charity work (such as the Ronald McDonald House), however we’re still growing this new side of HYP. If there’s anything more you’d like, please let us know, we’re always looking for fresh new ideas.
AGE? AM I TOO OLD/YOUNG TO JOIN?
Our target demographic is 18 to 40, but we don’t check ID at the door! If you want to come to our events, we’re happy to have you. However, to become a voting member, you must be aged between 18 and 40. Our events are aimed at young professionals and we like to provide a comfortable environment for that demographic.
HYP PROVIDES THE FRAMEWORK FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN NEWCASTLE AND THE HUNTER REGION TO NETWORK, ENGAGE, AND GROW IN SUCH A WAY THAT WE ARE DEVELOPING THE LEADERS OF THE NEW GENERATION.
