One warm Saturday afternoon after April Fools antics had concluded for another year, UoN’s BusCom and Hunter Young Professionals’ guests gathered at McDonald Jones Stadium to celebrate ‘Managing Partnerships & Athletes’ in the VIP, corporate box setting of a Hyundai A-League match – Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers.

It was a packed room in the stadium as Spark Helmore’s Darrine Rankine and the University of Newcastle’s Dr Paul Stolk welcomed guests and our guest speakers: David Eland and Lawrie McKinna.

Their enlightening talks were followed by a quick drinks break and canapés before the first half of the game.

During the half-time break, Joel Griffiths joined the room for a brief talk about his experiences travelling for sport to England, Japan, Switzerland and China. He shared with the room some key advice on the opportunities that have been present in his career.

Some of the advice and insights that the three shared on the evening and that you may have become privy to through our Twitter feed, included:

  • Invest in new talent
  • Sport is everyone’s business
  • Sports is a very competitive industry
  • Marketing people like to baffle you with a bit of marketing BS
  • Knowledge is power

While the Newcastle Jets may not have succeeded against the Wanderers the BusCom / HYP event was a soaring success.

Looking forward to our next event coming soon!
